High Definition Thermal Imaging Cameras and the War on Drugs

Thermal imaging technology has been available for many years and used primarily in the military sector. However, with exciting advances in the cameras used in the past few years, the uses for high definition thermal imaging cameras have expanded greatly.

These digital infrared cameras may prove particularly useful in the security and surveillance industry. Of course, thermal imaging cameras work by capturing the upper portions of the infrared light system. This light represents the heat given off by people, animals, and objects.

Infrared Thermal Imaging of Security AreaHigh definition thermal imaging cameras have many advantages over the standard definition cameras. The aspect of the picture that changes when using a high definition camera is the number of pixels in the image. The basic idea with pixels is that more is better. The more pixels present, the clearer the image will be and the closer a user will be able to zoom into the image before it becomes unclear.

The applications for high definition thermal imaging cameras are numerous, particularly in the security and surveillance industry. This is especially true in the war on drugs. For many years, law enforcement agents have used thermal imaging technology to capture images of homes and businesses to read the amount of heat that these buildings are giving off. These images are useful in finding criminals who may be growing or creating illegal drugs in their homes or businesses as these activities often times give off large amounts of heat as a bi-product.

High definition thermal imaging has the potential to make the process of capturing these images much more efficient. Because the high definition images have between four and sixteen times more pixels than standard definition cameras, law enforcement agents will be able to take fewer pictures of larger amounts of area. These images can then be increased in size an extra four to sixteen times before they become unclear. The time saved in using high definition thermal imaging will limit the time that agents have to be in the air or in the field and save on both fuel and labor. This also gives the agents more time to research and prosecute those involved in the production and sale of illegal drugs rather than taking more pictures of smaller areas.

It is clearly a smart move to upgrade to thermal imaging for security and surveillance needs. Not only does it provide information that would be much harder to obtain in other ways, it has the potential to save time and money. This is especially true in the instance of high definition thermal imaging cameras. They allow a worker to spend less time on pictures and more time on research and other key aspects of their work.
